British Chess Championships 2023 announced

The 2023 British Chess Championship will be held at The Venue, De Montfort University in Leicester, with events running from 20th to 30th July 2023. This will be the 109th British Chess Championship in a series, which has run almost unbroken since 1904.

British Championship 2023 – System of play

The British Chess Championship 2023 will be played from 22-30 July as a 9-round swiss championship with the following time control: First 40 moves in 90 minutes, then 30 minutes added for remainder of game, with 30 second increments added from move 1. The Championship features the total prize fund of £15,400 with £5,000 reserved for the Winner of the event.

British Senior Chess Championships (50+ and 65+) – System of play

The Seniors Championships will be played from 24-30 July, in 7 rounds, swiss system. The time control of the events will be: First 40 moves in 90 minutes, then 30 minutes added for remainder of game, with 30 second increments added from move 1. The prize fund of the events is £1,400 with £700 reserved for the Winners of each section.

British Junior Championships U16, U14, U12, U10, U8 – System of play

The British Junior Chess Championships will be played in 5 age categories: U8, U10, U12, U14 and U16, from 25-29 July 2023. Each championship will be played in 7 rounds, swiss system, with time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment for each move. The prize fund for each championship is £420.

Major Open 2023

Alongside the British Chess Championships, the Major Open 2023 will be played from 22nd to 30th July. It will be a 9-round Swiss Championship with rounds starting at 2.30pm each day except for the last round which will start at 10.00am on the final day. The time control of the event will be 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes added for remainder of the game, with 30 seconds increment added from move one.

There are no restrictions for registrations in the Major Open 2023. It is the open tournament with no eligibility or qualification requirement. The prize fund of for the top three players is £1,400 and the top 10 eligible players from the 2023 Major Open will qualify for the 2024 British Championship.


Eligibility and Qualifying:

The British Championship, British Junior Championships and British Senior Championships are restricted to citizens of the UK, British Overseas Territories, or the Republic of Ireland or players who have been resident for the last 12 months in the UK, Republic of Ireland, Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man. In addition players wanting to take part in the main British championship will need to qualify based on their title, rating or other qualification criteria as set out in –
a) the British Championships Eligibility and Qualification Regulations and
b) the supporting British Grand Prix Rules

The final list of qualifying players for the British Championships will be published in June 2023.
The British Junior and British Seniors Championships are open to all eligible players based on citizenship or residency as above with no specific qualification requirements. All other events outside of the British Championship, British Junior Championships and British Senior Championships are open events with no specific eligibility or qualification requirements.
