The Open Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Oviedo 2026 takes place from July 20 to July 26 in Oviedo, the capital of Spain’s Asturias region. The event consists of a single, nine-round Swiss open section held at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Oviedo, located in the Buenavista area.
The tournament is open to all licensed players, requiring a valid FEDA license for Spanish competitors and a FIDE ID for foreign participants. Grandmasters, International Masters, and any players with a FIDE standard rating above 2400 receive free entry into the event.
Competitors will play under a classical time control of 90 minutes for the entire game, supplemented by a 30-second increment starting from move one. The schedule blends single and double-round days to balance intensity across the week.
The tournament features a total confirmed cash prize fund of EUR 7,230. The overall winner will take home a top prize of EUR 1,800, with cash awards extending down to 10th place (EUR 150).
Dedicated financial incentives are also reserved for top performers inside specific rating bands, offering EUR 125 and EUR 90 for the first and second places in both the Under 2200 and Under 1900 FIDE categories. Additional non-cash prizes will be awarded within the women’s classification and various youth age groups.

Players can request up to two half-point byes before the tournament begins, though byes are not permitted during the final four rounds. A standard 30-minute default time will be enforced for forfeits, and ties in the final standings will be broken using FIDE Buchholz systems and Sonneborn-Berger criteria.
The general registration fee is set at EUR 50, with a reduced rate of EUR 40 available for Under-18 juniors and veterans aged 65 and over. At the moment 189 players are registered. The final deadline to register via bank transfer is July 18, 2026.
