IM Vignir Vatnar Stefansson is new Icelandic Chess Champion

20-year-old IM Vignir Vatnar Stefansson won his maiden National champion title at the Icelandic Chess Championship 2023 which was held from May 15-25 in Hafnarfjordur, Iceland.

After 11 played rounds, three players tied for the top: GM Jartansson Gudmundur, IM Vignir Vatnar Stefansson and GM Hannes Stefansson. According to the regulations of the event, the tiers for the title advanced to the playoffs to determine the new Icelandic Chess Champion.

The playoffs were played were played in 2 double-round-robin rounds with blitz time control of 5 minutes + 5 seconds increment, and IM Vignir Vatnar Stefansson emerged as the Winner scoring 3/4 points.
