Indian Grandmaster Mitrabha Guha has won the 2026 Commonwealth Chess Championship, which concluded today in the coastal city of Kalutara. Guha secured clear first place after scoring 7.5 points across nine rounds of play, finishing a half-point ahead of the rest of the field.

The tournament, which ran from May 16 to May 25, 2026, was hosted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka on behalf of FIDE and the Commonwealth Chess Association.

The 9-round Swiss tournament featured 93 participants representing 13 different Commonwealth nations. The field was highly competitive, including 38 titled players and 8 Grandmasters.

With his victory, Guha takes home the title of Commonwealth Champion and the guaranteed $1,500 USD top prize from the tournament’s overall $8,000 USD cash prize fund. The event also guaranteed a $1,000 USD payout for the top finisher in the women’s category.

In addition to the main open standings, the championship served as a multi-category battleground, with separate medals and certificates awarded across various divisions, including senior players (Over 50) and junior brackets ranging from Under-8 through Under-18.
