GM Mitrabha Guha triumphs at the Melbourne Chess Open 2024

The inaugural Melbourne International Chess Open 2024 took place from 3-7th April at the city’s Chess Club, in Melbourne, Australia. The event was played in Major and Open sections with more than 150 players who competed for the total prize fund of $15,000.

The rating favourite GM Mitrabha Guha (India, 2537) lived up to the expectations and convincingly triumphed in the tournament. Scoring 7.5 points, Mitrabha Guha was a full point ahead of FM Felix Xie (New Zealand, 2291) who finished in clear second position. As many as six players tied for third place scoring 6 points each, but IM Zhaoqi Liu (China, 2402) had the best tiebreaks criteria to clinch bronze.

CM James Hartley (Australia, 1931) emerged as the sole Winner of the Open event with the score of 8/9 points. Hartley was half a point ahead of CM Haran Salasan (Australia, 2089) who scored 7.5 points and came second.
