Candidates Tournament 2024: Magnus Carlsen betting on old guard

by L'immortale

After winning the Chessable Masters 2024, the first event on the Champions Chess Tour, Magnus Carlsen joined David Howell for an extensive interview. After discussing his Grand Final match against Alireza Fioruzja, Carlsen answered fans’ questions.

Being asked who will win the Candidates Tournament, Magnus put his bets on the old guard: “This tournament that I am playing now in Germany (referring to Freestyle Chess GOAT Challenge) is a real clash of generations. There are four young guys and four old guys, and I think it’s very very open. Obviously, I am one of the old guys, and I think it’s very open. While in the Candidates, I think that the old guys still have a bit of an edge. So that would be my guess, one of the old guys win“. See the complete interview below.

The tournament is an eight-player, double round-robin tournament, with 14 rounds where each player is facing the others twice: once with the black pieces and once with the white pieces. The tournament winner will qualify to play Ding Liren for the World Championship in 2024.
