Sunway Formentera Chess Festival 2024 starts in Spain

The third edition of the Sunway Formentera Chess Festival starts today in Spain! The event will be played from 9-19 April at the Hotel Club Sunway Punta Prima, Formentera – Islas Baleares, Spain.

The Festival features two tournaments: Open A and Open B, with a total prize fund of 20.000 euros. Around 50 players registered for the main Open A tournament, including 11 Grandmasters who will compete over 10-swiss rounds. The top seeds are: GM Alexander Donchenko (Germany, 2633), GM Vasyl Ivanchuk (Ukraine, 2611), GM Jules Moussard (France, 2610), GM Pranav V (India, 2604) and GM Valentin Dragnev (Austria, 2571).

If there is a tie for any of the first eight places in the final rankings, the playoff matches will determine the general rankings and the distribution of prizes. The playoff matches will consist of 2 blitz games with time control of 5 minutes + 3 seconds increment, and in case of a tie, the single Armaggedon game will determine the winner.

The field includes 15 female players and the best-rated are: IM Vantika Agrawal (India, 2398), IM Song Yuxin (China, 2379), and WGM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova (USA, 2357). Beside the regular prizes, the organizers provided special prizes for the best-ranked Women in the tournament. The top prize is 1.000 eur, the second prize is 500 eur, and the third prize is 300 eur.
