Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2023: “Strongest field ever”

by doubleattack

With the reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen and a World Championship challenger Ding Liren, five top 10 players and a total of eight top 20 players, the Masters of the jubilee edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament has a very strong field of participants.

The 85th edition of the tournament will take place from 13 to 29 January 2023 in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.

The reigning winner Magnus Carlsen will be looking to extend his record run to a 9th Wijk aan Zee title. Of the past tournament winners we have Levon Aronian (4 titles), Wesley So, Fabiano Caruana and Jorden Van Foreest joining again.

The up-and-coming generation will be represented by Olympic winner Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Indian prodigies Dommaraju Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, and German star Vincent Keymer.

It is notable the complete absence of the Russian players, irregardless of their statements about the invasion on Ukraine. Participants (November 21 ratings):
