The 126th Annual U.S. Open Chess Championship officially concluded on August 9 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, following a week of high-level classical chess at the DeVos Place Convention Center.
A staple of the American chess calendar, this year’s historic single-section format brought together a massive field of 533 participants, creating a unique battleground where untitled club players, rising prodigies, and seasoned grandmasters all competed in the same 9-round Swiss field.
After nine grueling rounds, the top of the leaderboard saw an extraordinary outcome: eight players finished tied for first place.
With the title, the U.S. Open trophy, cash bonuses, and a coveted qualifying spot for the U.S. Championship on the line, the top two players on tiebreaks, GM Grigoriy Oparin and three-time Grand Prix champion GM Jianchao Zhou, advanced to a winner-take-all Armageddon playoff.
In the decisive tiebreak, Oparin took the White pieces with 10 minutes on the clock, needing a win against Zhou, who held Black with 8 minutes and draw odds.
Oparin delivered a good game with the White pieces, defeating Zhou to officially secure the title of 2026 U.S. Open Champion.
By winning the tiebreak, Oparin officially earns the single automatic qualification spot reserved for the top American finisher. He will advance to compete in the prestigious U.S. Chess Championship this October at the Saint Louis Chess Club.
Alongside the action on the boards, the annual US Chess Delegate Meeting coincided with the event in Grand Rapids, marking a key administrative transition for American chess. John Fernandez was officially elected as the new President of the US Chess Federation, stepping into leadership as the organization continues its growth across national and scholastic programs.
