The Paraguay Chess Federation determined their Teams for the 45th Chess Olympiad which takes place in September this year, in Budapest, Hungary. The Open and Women’s teams were announced after the Olympiad Qualification tournaments which were held from 12-16 February.

The Paraguayan Olympiad Qualifications were played in Open and Women’s sections separately, with 6 players competing over the course of 5 rounds (round-robin system). The Winners of each event reserved their seats in the Paraguayan National Teams.
The first four players of the Paraguayan Open Team were booked by GM Axel Bachmann (2578), GM Guillermo Vazquez (2571), GM Neuris Delgado (2517) and GM Jose Cubas (2427), while FM Mattias Latore (2299) placed himself in the team after clinching the Qualification event. As many as three players scored 3/5 points at the Paraguayan Olympiad Qualifier, but Mattias Latore’s direct encounter tiebreaks showed he deserves a ticket to Budapest.
The Paraguayan Women’s Team will be led by WGM Jennifer Perez (2224), WIM Gabriela Vargas (2084), WCM Helen Montiel (1678), Fiorella Mayeregger (1524), and WCM Paula Oviedo (1678) who earned her spot in the Qualifier tournament.
WCM Paula Oviedo was convincing at the Paraguayan Women’s Olympiad Qualifiers, scoring perfect 5/5 points, leaving no doubts who will complete the National women’s team. Final rankings of the Paraguayan Olympiad Qualifiers can be seen on the bottom of the article
