The wait is over, but the controversy is far from settled. Today, Netflix officially released “UNTOLD: Chess Mates,” a deep dive into the 2022 Sinquefield Cup scandal and the subsequent legal and psychological warfare between Magnus Carlsen and Hans Niemann.

While the documentary was marketed as the “Drive to Survive” moment for chess, the immediate fallout suggests it has only reopened old wounds.

Hans Niemann: “Absolutely Disgusting”

The most explosive reaction came from Hans Niemann himself. Taking to X just hours after the release, Niemann did not hold back in his criticism of the journalists covering the story.

“What an absolutely disgusting title. Perhaps you could have mentioned that I was declared absolutely innocent in all OTB [over-the-board] games by my biggest detractors. At this point no one should take you seriously as a ‘chess journalist’ anymore.”

Niemann’s frustration seems rooted in the documentary’s focus on past online cheating rather than his exoneration regarding the 2022 over-the-board match. In a subsequent post that quickly went viral, he added: “I never received an apology. Let that sink in.”

Carlsen’s Admission

A key highlight of the film is a candid moment when Magnus Carlsen admitted he was “way in his own head”. For many, this is the closest Carlsen has come to acknowledging that his reaction may have been fueled more by psychological pressure and suspicion than by concrete evidence of foul play during that specific game.

Reactions: A “Nothingburger”?

Over on r/chess, the “front page of the chess world,” the reaction has been characteristically polarized. While some users praised the high production value and the drama, many seasoned fans expressed disappointment.

Grandmaster Arturs Neiksans summarized the sentiment of the “purists,” stating:

“As expected, one big nothingburger for the true chess fan. I hope that at least the general audience enjoyed the storytelling and editing.”

On Reddit, the consensus seems to be that while Chess Mates succeeds as a piece of entertainment for the mainstream, it offers very little new evidence for those who followed the saga in real-time. Comments range from praising the “unhinged” interviews with Niemann, who at one point in the film refers to the elite chess world as a “chess mafia”, to criticizing the documentary for leaning too heavily into the “anal bead” memes that dominated the internet years ago.

Whether this documentary helps chess grow or simply cements its reputation for high-stakes toxicity remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: on April 7, 2026, the world is talking about chess again.
