The Chania Chess Academy, in collaboration with A.P.O. “Mikis Theodorakis,” has announced the 2026 edition of the International Open Chess Tournament “Mikis Theodorakis.” The event will be held from April 3 to April 9, 2026, in the historic city of Chania, Crete, Greece.
The tournament is organized in cooperation with the Region and Municipality of Chania and the Greek Chess Federation, combining high-level classical chess with the unique cultural heritage of Crete.
The games will take place at the Center for Mediterranean Architecture – The Great Arsenal. This landmark venue is situated in Chania’s Old Town, near the Venetian Harbor, offering a professional playing environment in a historic setting.
Format and Technical Details
The tournament follows a 9-round Swiss system and is split into two categories to accommodate different playing levels:
Group A: Targeted at players rated above 1700 ELO (with specific exceptions for those rated 1650–1700). This section allows for FIDE title norms.
Group B: Open to players rated under 1700 ELO.
Time Control: 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment starting from move one.
Prize Fund
The total cash prize fund stands at €4,700.
- Group A (Overall): 1st: €1,000; 2nd: €600; 3rd: €400.
- Group A (Women): 1st: €300; 2nd: €200; 3rd: €100.
- Group B (Overall): 1st: €300; 2nd: €200; 3rd: €100.
Combined Prizes: A special prize fund of €1,000 is available for players with the highest total points combined from this event and the International Chess Tournament Pafos (Cyprus).
Schedule
- April 3: Registration deadline (11:00), Opening Ceremony (16:00), and Round 1 (16:30).
- April 4 & 6: Double-round days (10:00 and 17:00).
- April 9: Final Round (10:00) followed by the Closing Ceremony (16:30).
