The 20-year-old Uzbekistani grandmaster Abdimalik Abdisalimov claimed the 1st Al-Beruniy International Chess Tournament, held in Khiva, Uzbekistan from 29 November to 3 December 2022.
Uzbekistani players dominated in the event winning the first five prizes. IM Abdimalik Abdisalimov and GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov tied for the top with 7 points (each), and the direct encounter between the tiers determined the Winner. Thanks to a whopping victory in the fourth round, Abdisalimov clinched the Winner title and the money prize of $6000.
Vokhidov took second place and the prize of $5000, and IM Mukhiddin Madaminov came clear third with the score of 6 points pocketing $4000. A group of 6 players followed with 5.5 points (each), and FM Khumoyun Begmuratov and Davron Sharipov ended fourth and fifth (respectively) thanks to the best rating performances.
The rating favorites did not live up to the expectations. The second-seeded GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy came sixth with 5.5 points, while the top-seeded GM Nodirbek Yakubboev and the third rating favorite GM Vitaly Sivuk finished the event with a score of 5 points.
The 1st International Al-Beruniy Chess Tournament was held from 29 November to 3 December in the ancient city of Khiva, Uzbekistan, simultaneously with the FIDE Womenโs Candidates Pool B tournament. The event was played in 9 rounds, swiss system, with the time control of 90 minutes for the whole game + 30 seconds increment for each move, starting from the move one. The event featured three Open tournaments: A, B, and C, with a total prize fund of $40700.
