The SV Werder Bremen sports club celebrated its 125th anniversary last week, organizing a 125-year Jubilee Chess Tournament in Bremen, Germany. The tournament gathered 24 titled players from 10 countries, marking the 75th anniversary of the SV Werder Bremen chess club. The event was played from 2-10 March, in 9 rounds, swiss system, with classical time control.
GM Aditya Mittal (India, 2594) emerged as a convincing winner of the event with a score of 7/9 points. 17-year-old Indian grandmaster went unbeaten in the championship, and finished a full point ahead of GM Pawel Teclaf (Poland, 2556) who was second with 6 points. As many as four players tied for third, scoring 5.5 points each: GM Bobby Cheng (Australia, 2584), GM Szymon Gumularz (Poland, 2590), and GM Zahar Efimenko (Ukraine, 2568).
FM Jana Schneider (Germany, 2303) was the best-ranked female player in the event with a score of 5 points. WGM Mitra Hejazipour (France, 2356) followed with 5.5 points, and WGM Viktoria Radeva (Bulgaria, 2325) was third-ranked female with 3.5 points.
The Managing Director of the SV Werder Bremen club Anne-Kathrin Laufmann took part in the awarding ceremony of the tournament. She expressed her happiness that Werder was able to host such an important international tournament to mark the club’s anniversary. “Werder is more than football!”, she concluded.
