Candidates Tournament 2024 officially declared open

by L'immortale

The Candidates Tournament 2024 was officially declared open yesterday in Toronto, Canada.

The Opening day started with the Press Conference attended by Emil Sutovsky, CEO of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Vladimir Drkulec, President of the Chess Federation of Canada, Fabiano Caruana (USA), the top-rated contender in the FIDE Candidates Tournament, and Vaishali R (India), one of the youngest participants in the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament.

The Opening ceremony of the event was held in the evening with the presence of all players and distinguished guests. Five-time World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand officially declared the event open:

It’s only eight years since I competed myself, and two participants of that event are still going strong. I am also excited that this is the first time we are having both Candidates events in the same venue and it’s fantastic for us that we are getting to host it here in Toronto. That couldn’t have happened without the support the Scheinberg family extended to us, a big thank you to you. I would like to wish all the participants all the very best and I declare the 2024 FIDE Candidates Tournament open!
