Anna Muzychuk Steps In! FIDE Confirms Replacement for Women’s Candidates 2026

by L'immortale

The air of uncertainty hanging over the 2026 FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament has partially cleared. Following the withdrawal of Indian legend Koneru Humpy, who stepped down from the tournament due to safety concerns about the venue in Cyprus, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) has officially confirmed that Ukrainian Grandmaster Anna Muzychuk will join the field at the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort.

The Replacement

FIDE moved swiftly to fill the vacancy, adhering to Article 2.2 of the tournament regulations. The spot was reserved for the next highest-placed, yet-unqualified player from the FIDE Women’s Events 2024–25 cycle.

Ukrainian GM Anna Muzychuk was first in line according to regulations, but it was unclear whether she’ll be ready to accept due to a one week’s notice. However, despite the short time window, Muzychuk has accepted the invitation, ensuring the eight-player field remains at full strength.

While Humpy’s departure was a blow to the tournament’s prestige, Muzychuk’s inclusion brings a different kind of gravitas. As one of the most consistent elite players of the last decade, her participation ensures the competitive integrity of the event remains world-class.

Muzychuk’s arrival still comes amid the same security concerns that triggered Humpy’s exit. With the ongoing conflict in West Asia and recent drone strikes on British bases in Cyprus, the tournament environment remains in the spotlight.

FIDE’s Firm Stance

Despite Humpy’s withdrawal and indirect criticism from other players, including World #2 Hikaru Nakamura who recently flagged concerns over infrastructure and power outages on the island, FIDE leadership has doubled down.

Our plans have not changed,” stated FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky. “We are monitoring the situation daily. Cyprus is not in a state of war, and there is no emergency situation.

The Road Ahead

Muzychuk joins a formidable lineup including Zhu Jiner, Tan Zhongyi, Bibisara Assaubayeva, Aleksandra Goryachkina, Kateryna Lagno, Divya Deshmukh and Vaishali R. For Muzychuk, this represents a golden opportunity to fight for a challenger spot against reigning World Champion Ju Wenjun.

For the chess world, the focus now shifts from the “who” to the “where.” As players begin to arrive in Paphos, all eyes will be on whether the tournament can proceed without further disruptions or if Humpy’s exit was a canary in the coal mine.
