by L'immortale

The Reykjavik Chess Open 2024 kicked off yesterday with more than 400 players in the field, including over 100 titled players and famous chess streamers. Anna Cramling was paired against her compatriot, 20-year-old GM Platon Galperin, and got surprised with his opening choice!

Today, Chess history was made. I played round one of Reykjavik Open and I was facing an extremely strong 20-year-old Swedish grandmaster. Coming into the game I knew that this would be very difficult, because he was rated 2555, he had 400 points more elo than me. But what I didn’t know was that it was not going to be his strength that was going to surprise me, it was going to be the opening he chose that would completely shock me!“, explained Anna in her Round 1 game recap. GM Platon Galperin chose to play the Cow Opening! It was the one that Anna Cramling invented some ten months ago.

Anna opted for a very aggressive approach against her own opening, but her sacrifices weren’t sound. Galperin won a decisive advantage and eventually won the game. Check out Anna Cramling’s Round 1 recap below:
