Dutch Grandmaster Max Warmerdam has officially been declared the tournament winner of the 20th edition of the HSG Open, which took place from June 19 to June 21, 2026, in Hilversum, The Netherlands.
The three-day tournament concluded with a dramatic tie at the summit of the elite Group A section. Both Warmerdam and Irish International Master Tarun Kanyamarala finished the event as undefeated joint winners, each scoring an impressive 5 points out of 6 games.
The two players remained inseparable throughout the weekend, drawing their direct encounter against one another. While tournament tiebreak rules officially handed the title and trophy to Grandmaster Warmerdam, the pair split the financial rewards equally, with both players taking home a cash prize of €1,000.
The anniversary edition of the tournament attracted exceptional interest from across the continental chess scene. The premier section, Group A (reserved for players with a FIDE rating over 2000), featured a highly competitive field of 115 participants representing 12 different countries.
Organized at the four-star Amrâth Hotel Lapershoek in Hilversum, the festival was split into four distinct rating bands (Groups A, B, C, and D) to guarantee fair and closely contested games. The entire event was run as a grueling 6-round Swiss system format under classical time controls, with players receiving 1 hour and 50 minutes for the entire game, plus a 10-second increment per move starting from move one.
