Gukesh Withdraws from GCT Full Tour, Sindarov Steps In

by pinnedrook

The 2026 Grand Chess Tour (GCT) has undergone a major roster change just weeks before its first move. In a surprise announcement from Saint Louis, the GCT confirmed that reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju has officially withdrawn from the full tour lineup. However, he is set to appear as a wildcard in the Rapid & Blitz events in Warsaw and Zagreb.

Gukesh: “Seeking Form through Rest”

Gukeshโ€™s decision comes after a string of results that he himself described as “disappointing.” In a candid statement, the young star explained that his team has decided to lower his competitive intensity to prioritize recovery and dedicated training.

“In order to find my best form, my team and I have decided that I should compete with slightly less intensity over the next few months,” Gukesh shared. “Consequently, we feel it is in my best interest to skip long events away from home. Iโ€™m very grateful for the GCT organizers’ support and understanding.”

This move highlights the immense mental toll of the modern chess circuit, with Gukesh choosing long-term stability over the grueling full-tour schedule.

Sindarov Steps In

Gukeshโ€™s spot in the full tour will be taken by Uzbekistanโ€™s Javokhir Sindarov. The reigning FIDE World Cup champion enters the tour during a period of exceptional form. Sindarov, known for his fearless tactical style, will now compete in Warsaw, Bucharest, and both prestigious Saint Louis events (Rapid & Blitz and the Sinquefield Cup).

“We respect Gukeshโ€™s decision and welcome his participation in Warsaw and Zagreb,” said Alex Onischuk, GCT Deputy Executive Director. “At the same time, weโ€™re excited to have Javokhir Sindarov join. He has demonstrated exceptional form at the highest level.”

The 2026 Road to the Finals

The replacement of Gukesh with Sindarov adds a new layer of intrigue to the 2026 season. Sindarovโ€™s inclusion means the Tour gains a player hungry for his first major GCT title, while Gukesh remains a dangerous “spoiler” in the faster formats.

The updated 2026 GCT Schedule:

  • Super Rapid & Blitz Poland: May 3โ€“10 (Warsaw)
  • Super Chess Classic Romania: May 12โ€“24 (Bucharest)
  • Super Rapid & Blitz Croatia: June 29โ€“July 6 (Zagreb)
  • Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz: July 31โ€“August 7 (USA)
  • Sinquefield Cup: August 8โ€“21 (USA)
  • GCT Finals: August 21โ€“28 (USA)

As the elite of the chess world heads to Warsaw this May, all eyes will be on Sindarov to see if he can take advantage of this massive opportunity.
