The tropical paradise of Roatan, Honduras, played host to one of the most innovative events in modern chess history. The BTC960 Championship, held from March 16 to March 22, 2026, successfully combined the creative Fischer Random Chess (Chess960) with the cutting-edge financial world of Bitcoin.

Organized by the National Chess Federation of Honduras (FENAH) in partnership with Infinity and ZEDE Prospera, the tournament saw GM Alexander Grischuk dominate a field of competitors eager to test their skills without the aid of deep opening theory.

A Grueling Three-Stage Format

The championship was designed as a true test of endurance and versatility, spanning five days of intense competition:

  • The Open Stage (March 16–17): The event kicked off with a 9-round Swiss Open. Players battled for one of the 12 coveted qualifying spots (11 top finishers plus the best Honduran player).
  • The Survival Day (March 19): In a high-stakes double-elimination bracket, the qualifiers were whittled down. This “Survival” stage was characterized by rapid pairings and heart-stopping Armageddon tiebreaks, leaving only the top six players standing.
  • The Grand Finals (March 21–22): The final six faced off in a double round-robin format with the time control 25 min + 30 sec / move.

A Bitcoin-Powered Prize Pool

Setting a new precedent for international tournaments, all entry fees and prizes were transacted via the Bitcoin Lightning Network. With a total prize fund of 2.00 BTC, the stakes were incredibly high. The winner took home a staggering 1.00 BTC, making it one of the most lucrative specialized chess events of the year.

Final Standings:

  1. GM Alexander Grischuk (FIDE, 2645), 7 points
  2. GM Olexandr Bortnyk (Ukraine, 2604), 6 points
  3. GM Leinier Dominguez Perez (USA, 2738), 5.5 points
  4. GM David Anton Guijarro (Spain, 2666), 5 points
  5. GM Benjamin Bok (Netherlands, 2589), 3.5 points
  6. GM Jorge Cori (Peru, 2605), 3 points

A New Era for Chess in Honduras

Beyond the board, the tournament served as a landmark for the region. “By bringing together ZEDE Prospera’s economic innovation and the intellectual challenge of Chess960, we’ve shown that Honduras can be a hub for global sporting events,” noted the organizers.

The chess world looks forward to seeing if this “Satoshis and 960” model will become a new standard for independent tournaments worldwide.
