BREAKING: Koneru Humpy Officially Withdraws from Women’s Candidates Tournament

by pinnedrook

The crisis surrounding the 2026 Candidates Chess Tournament has reached a boiling point. Only few days after expressing her deep concerns over the security situation in Cyprus, Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has officially announced her withdrawal from the event.

In a statement released on Twitter, she made it clear that personal safety outweighs any sporting ambition. “No event, no matter how important, can come before personal safety and well-being,” Humpy stated. “Despite the assurances provided, I do not feel fully secure under the current circumstances.”

A Major Blow to the Field

Humpy’s withdrawal is a massive loss for the Women’s Candidates. As one of the most experienced players in the field, her absence disrupts the entire dynamic of the tournament. Humpy had previously hinted that this might be her final shot at the Classical World title, making this “painful but necessary” decision even more significant.

Who instead Koneru?

Regulations for the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026 state that if a replacement is required, the spot shall be awarded to the next yet-unqualified player from the FIDE Women’s Events 2024–25. This puts GM Anna Muzychuk first in line to replace Koneru Humpy, though it remains to be seen who will accept the invitation on just one week’s notice.

FIDE Under Pressure

The withdrawal of Koneru Humpy puts immense pressure on FIDE. Despite Humpy’s earlier pleas to reschedule or move the event, FIDE had maintained that the tournament would proceed as planned. Now with a top-tier player officially pulling out, the chess world is waiting to see if other participants will follow suit or if FIDE will be forced into a last-minute change of venue.

Humpy’s final words on the matter resonate beyond the chessboard: “This is a painful but necessary decision, and I stand by it.”
