Uganda Chess Championship / Olympiad Qualifiers 2024 concluded

The 2024 National Chess Championships of Uganda and the Qualifiers for the 45th Chess Olympiad took place from 11 February to 2 March in Ntinda – Kampala. The event was played in Open and Women’s sections separately, and each tournament was a 14-player round-robin.

IM Arthur Ssegwanyi convincingly won the Open Championship scoring impressive 11/13 points. Ssegwanyi was point and a half ahead of FM Haruna Nsubuga who clinched silver with 9.5 points, while three players tied for bronze scoring 9 points, completing Uganda’s line up for Budapest Olympiad. FM Patrick Kawuma won bronze, Mark Nyola Wasswa came fourth and CM Emmanuel Egesa finished the event in the fifth place taking the last available seat for Hungary.

WCM Shakira Ampaire and Kayyar Sana Omprakash tied for the top of the Women’s tournament with 10.5 points each. Shakira Ampaire clinched the national title and lifted the winners’ trophy thanks to better tiebreaks, and Kayyar Sana Omprakash took silver medal. Patricia Kawuma and Peninah Nakabo scored 10 points to share 3-4 place, while the top-seeded WFM Claire Amoko Ivy finished the event in the fifth place and took the last spot in the Olympiad women’s team. Uganda’s Women’s National team was the most stylish at the 2022 Chess Olympiad in Chennai and received a special award for the best outfit.
