A new era in elite chess will officially launch this autumn as Budapest hosts the pilot event for the Total Chess World Championship Tour. Running from November 10–21, 2026, at the historic Anantara New York Palace Hotel, the FIDE-approved concept, created by the organizers behind Norway Chess, aims to redefine top-level competition by testing players across three distinct speed disciplines: Blitz, Rapid, and Fast Classic.
The pilot event will establish the official format, regulations, and prize structure ahead of the tour’s full global launch in March 2027, which will culminate in crowning the official FIDE World Combined Champion.
Redefining the Ultimate Chess Test
Unlike traditional events focused on a single time control, the Total Chess World Championship Tour is designed to identify the most versatile, complete player on the planet. World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen leads a field of top international men and women who will compete across all three formats, with cumulative scores determining the overall standings.

Star Power and Major Commercial Backing
The initiative represents a major commercial leap forward for professional chess, backed by high-profile international investors. Among the primary financial supporters is Chess Mates, a venture co-founded by global football superstar Erling Haaland and Norwegian investor Morten Borge. The project has also secured backing from five-time Olympic cross-country skiing champion Johannes Høsflot Klæbo.
This convergence of elite sports figures and institutional capital reflects growing international confidence in chess as a high-value media and entertainment product.
A Historic Venue for a New Chapter
The choice of location links chess’s deep history with its future trajectory. The venue, the Anantara New York Palace Hotel, is home to the famous New York Café, a Belle Époque literary landmark that has served as a gathering hub for European intellectuals and artists since 1894.
Budapest itself holds a storied position in chess history, having produced generations of Olympiad winners and legendary players, including Judit Polgár. From November 10–21, the Hungarian capital will once again serve as the focal point of the chess world as a new global circuit takes its first official steps.
