Salamanca – Cradle of Modern Chess

The 6th edition of the Salamanca – Cradle of Modern Chess Festival takes place from April 25 to 29 in Salamanca. Alumni – University of Salamanca organizes the event with aim to commemorate the newly born rules of chess which were complied in 1497 in the city of Salamanca. The rules were written by Lucena, a student of the University of Salamanca, who published them in the book “Art of chess with 150 games”. One of these copies is preserved in the Historical Library of the University.  

The Festival includes a wide program of activities: master tournament with 8 players, conferences, simultaneous exhibitions, chess courses, days of promotion of chess, amateur chess tournament, popular chess tournament, children’s chess tournament, educational chess congress, international open “Pablo de Unamuno Tournament”…

One of the main events of the festival is the Masters tournament played as the 8-player round-robin competition with participation of: GM Veselin Topalov, GM Kirill Alekseenko, GM Jaime Santos Latasa, GM Vasyl Ivanchuk, IM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, IM Gunay Mammadzada, GM Anna Ushenina and IM Sabrina Vega Gutierrez. The time control of the event is 40 minutes for the entire game, plus a 5-second increment starting from move one.
