World No 1 and defending World Rapid and Blitz Chess Champion GM Magnus Carlsen was expelled from the World Rapid Chess Championship in the 9th round for violating the dress code.
Magnus Carlsen wore jeans and got fined with $200, receiving a warning from the Chief Arbiter that he needs to change if he wants to continue competing. Since Carlsen didn’t change the jeans, the Chief Arbiter decided not to pair him for the 9th round and Carlsen left the tournament, withdrawing from Blitz Championship as well.
FIDE published the statement on the case, saying that they remain committed to respecting the rules that all participants agreed to follow.
