The 26th HZ Open Chess Tournament is being held from 3-10th August at the HZ University of Applied Sciences in Vlissingen, Netherlands.
The organizers have issued a press release stating that they have expelled a player from the tournament after a mobile phone was found on him.
During round 7, a chess player from Terneuzen was removed from the HZ Chess Tournament. The player, who normally plays in the lower regions of the Zeeland competition, had already stood out in previous rounds by beating players with a much higher rating with almost perfect play.
Today the referees noticed that he was on his way to the toilets with a mobile phone hidden in his sock.
Since chess programs on a smartphone are now so strong that they can beat the world champion, it is strictly forbidden to walk around with a phone in your pocket during tournaments.
In addition to immediate expulsion from the tournament, a report will also be sent to the chess association. In similar cases, a suspension of several years usually followed.
