The event will be played in 7 rounds, round-robin system, with the classical time control (90 minutes for 40 moves and then 30 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from the first move. The Malmo rules of no draws before move 40 will apply in the tournament.

This yearโ€™s tournament offers a proper Clash of Generations. The spotlight will definitely be on the first-ever classical encounter between five-time World Chess Champion and World #1 Magnus Carlsen and 14-year-old Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus. The Turkish prodigy arrives in Malmo fresh from becoming the youngest player in history to cross the 2700 Elo mark, breaking a decade-old record held by Wei Yi. Carlsen himself has described Erdogmus as the “best 14-year-old the world has ever seen”. With the “no draws before move 40” rule in play, we are likely in for an exceptionally entertaining week of fighting chess!
