The much anticipated over-the-board clash between Magnus Carlsen and Hans Niemann will happen in the Speed Chess Championship Semifinal in Paris.

Magnus Carlsen defeated Arjun Erigaisi 12-9 in the SCC Quarterfinal and advanced to the next round where Hans Niemann is awaiting him.

This will be their first meet since the scandal during the Sinquefield Cup in September 2022. Until now, Carlsen has been avoiding to play Niemann, the most recent occasion being FIDE quick event in Astana.

Starting from this season, the SCC Final Four are played in person. The venue will be ESpot in Paris, France.

In his post-match interview Niemann shared some very strong opinions. Chess.com CCO Daniel Rensch responded later on Twitter.

Carlsen: “Itโ€™s no secret that I would wish for another opponent”

After the match Carlsen was in bad mood during the interview. He started with “I’m feeling really poor, barely slept last night.”

On the question about the upcoming SCC Semifinal match and about Niemann’s interview, Carlsen said:
– That’s okay regarding Hans’ interviewโ€”nothing new or surprising. I’ve said my peace to camera in documentary and I don’t want to particularly elaborate.
– He’s playing quite well, I think if I have a decent day I will probably win without many issues.
– It’s a match that many people want to see.
– It’s no secret that I would wish for another opponent.

After the pairings was confirmed, Niemann tweeted: “You have ran but now you can’t hide”.
