GM Magnus Carlsen and GM Ian Nepomniachtchi co-win the 2024 World Blitz Chess Championship after incredible 7-game long Final Match.

During the first day of the event, Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi were in a group of 10 players who tied for first place scoring 9.5/13 points. Tiebreaks criteria determined eight players who qualify for the next knockout phase which took place today, including both Carlsen and Nepomniachtchi.

After qualifying for the Finals, Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi faced each other for the title. The match started with two wins for Carlsen who needed only a draw to win the title. However, Nepo bounced back, winning two games on demand and the match proceeded to the tiebreaks where the first player who wins the game wins the tournament. Three games of the tiebreaks finished in a draw after thrilling fights, and Magnus Carlsen suggested that they should share the title of the Winner.

After some discussions, the suggestion was approved by FIDE, and for the first time in history, FIDE got co-Winners in the World Blitz Chess Championship – Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi!
