The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 is around the corner, and while some of the players have understandable safety concerns about the Cyprus venue, the other players are strictly focused on chess and final preparations for the event.
GM Anish Giri shared on his official X account that he’s watching instructive videos titled “How to win FIDE Candidates”, and moreover, he even shared the “recipe” he has for the victory! The preparation part of the “recipe” is divided into multiple phases, and includes:
- Phase 1: Database & Opponent Analysis (includes tendency mapping and lines overview),
- Phase 2: Specific Preparation Cycles (includes sparring sessions with seconds, analysis and developments of novelties, endgame mastering),
- Phase 3: Mindset & Stamina Optimization (includes visualization training, stress management and physical recovery).
When the preparational phase is finished, the big plan turns to the Tournament journey! The “document” outlines a sophisticated roadmap for the tournament itself. Termed the “Tournament Dynamics & Standings Control,” it lists four core directives for the 14-round marathon: Handle Fatigue, Maintain Focus, Exploit Opportunities, and Be Resourceful.
Giriโs roadmap further breaks the event into four tactical quarters: Establishing the Baseline (Rounds 1-4), Pressing the Leaders (Rounds 5-8), Peak Stamina (Rounds 9-12), and The Decisive Finish (Rounds 13-14).

While the chess world often views Giriโs social media output through a lens of humour, there is no joke about his chances at the upcoming Candidates Tournament 2026!
