GM Kirill Alekseenko shows dominance at Chessable Sunway Sitges Chess 2022

Russian grandmaster Kirill Alekseenko emerged as the sole Winner of the 9th Sunway Sitges International Chess Festival.

GM Kirill Alekseenko showed complete dominance at the event maintaining the lead from the very beginning. The 25-year-old was scoring 7/7 points, having whopping chances to win the event with only three rounds to go. Nonetheless, the last round happened to be decisive for the first as Alekseenko faced GM Hans Niemann who trailed by half a point. The Russian needed half a point to clinch the event and the game finished in a draw after the thrilling fight and slight edge for Niemann. With 8.5/10 points, Alekseenko pocketed the Winner prize of 5.000 euros.

GM Hans Niemann and GM Amin Tabatabaei tied for second place scoring 8 points each. It is interesting that Tabatabaei cruised back to the top after withdrawing from the first game against Israeli IM Netanel Levi as Iran’s Government does not recognize the legitimacy of Israel as a state.

The playoffs played under the Sitges’ sky determined 2nd-8th positions. GM Hans Niemann came second, GM Amin Tabatabei third. As many as 11 players tied for third but after the playoffs, GM Manuel Petrosyan came fourth, GM Vasif Durarbayli fifth, GM Yu Yangyi sixth, GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy seventh and GM Murali Karthikeyan finished in the 8th place.

IM Irina Bulmaga was the best-ranked female player despite a slow start. A strong finish brought her to the top bringing her the money prize of 1.500 euros. IM Teodora Injac and IM Nurgyul Salimova came second and third (respectively) thanks to the best tiebreak criteria.

The 9th edition of the Sunway Sitges International Chess Festival was played from 11th – 22nd December in Sitges, Barcelona. The Festival featured two Open tournaments (A and B), blitz side events, and masterclasses, with the total prize fund amounting to 27.155€. The main tournament Open A was played in 10 rounds according to the swiss system, with a time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, 30 minutes for the rest of the game, and the increment of 30 seconds from the move one.
