The 15th International and National Open Chess Tournament of Mexico City, “Copa Independencia 2026,” concluded on September 16, 2026, at the Hotel del Prado in Mexico City.
Organized by the Mexico City Chess Clubs Association and endorsed by FENAMAC, the prestigious festival featured a large prize pool of $565,000 MXN in cash and prizes awarded across ten categories.
The premier “Hidalgo” Open section featured a competitive field of 44 players competing over 9 classical rounds (90 minutes plus a 30-second increment). The division attracted elite international players vying for FIDE ratings, norms, and the title.
Mexican Grandmaster Juan Carlos Obregon Rivero (2463) delivered an outstanding performance to capture clear first place. Obregon Rivero scored 7.0/9 points throughout the six-day event to secure the championship trophy and the $32,000 MXN top prize in the Hidalgo section.
