by L'immortale

The African Chess Championships 2024 took place from 12-21 March in Accra, Ghana, with separate Open and Women’s tournaments. The events were played in 9-swiss rounds, with $20,000 in prizes.

GM Amin Bassem (Egypt, 2670) clinched the title in the Open tournament scoring impressive 8.5/9 points! Amin Bassem won the tournament with a round to spare as he headed into the final round with a 1.5-point gap between himself and the runner-ups. With the victory in the last round, Bassem showed complete dominance and justified the top-seed role. GM Amin Bassem won his seventh title in the tournament, the top prize of $5,000, and qualified for the FIDE World Chess Cup 2025.

GM Bellahcene Bilel (Algeria, 2522) scored 7 points to win silver medal and IM Mwali Chitumbo (Zambia, 2340) won bronze with 6.5 points.

WIM Jesse Nikki February (South Africa, 1920) triumphed in the Women’s tournament with the score of 7.5 points. She needed a draw in the last round to clinch gold, and earned it after a tough fight. Finishing a whole point ahead of the runner-ups, Jesse Nikki February earned the money prize of $2,000.

The top-seeded WGM Wafa Shahenda (Egypt, 2083) and WIM Nassr Lina (Algeria) tied for second place with 6.5 points each. Nassr Lina had better tiebreaks to clinch silver, and Wafa Shahenda won bronze medal. Final rankings can be found below
