The Ghanaian Chess Federation determined their teams for the upcoming Chess Olympiad 2024 in Budapest, Hungary. The best-ranked five players in the Ghanian Open and Women’s National Championships reserved their spot in the National team, and the winners of the events were crowned Ghanaian National Champions.
The Ghanaian Chess Championship 2023 took place from 26-30 December last year in Accra, and both Open and Women’s events were played as 10-player round-robin tournaments.
CM Kwabena Adu-Poku defended the title and clinched the Open tournament scoring 7/9 points. He was half a point ahead of FM John Kojo Hasford who finished in clear second position with a score of 6.5 points. Cephas Clinton Fomevor claimed bronze medal with 5.5 points, while three players tied for the fourth place and two available seats for the Olympiad. Having better tiebreaks, IM Francis Eric Anquandah was the fourth player to represent Ghana in Budapest, and Bernard Anhwere took the final spot. Daniel Frempong-Smart finished the event in sixth place, and he won’t be in Ghana’s national squad.
Gertrude Banini emerged as the winner of the Ghanaian Women’s Chess Championship 2023 scoring impressive 8/9 points. With the score of 7.5 points, Maud Benson claimed silver, and five-time Ghanaian Women’s Champion WCM Tobi Felix clinched bronze medal with 6.5 points. Two players tied for fourth place and reserved their spots in the national team: Dzidzor Esi Dotse and Hephzibah Awura-Ama Manuebea Tandoh.
