Fabiano Caruana, who had just won Bucharest Grand Chess Tour and Zagreb SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz, is set to visit Jamaica from July 24 to 25 to meet with the local chess community and take part in their activities.
The main event in which Caruana is participating is “GM in 10”, a unique initiative with the purpose to identify and train the most talented chess players in Jamaica to produce the first-ever home-grown chess grandmaster.
Caruana will also meet with Jamaicaโs Olympiad teams to provide some instruction as they prepare for the Chess Olympiad in September.
Jamaica Chess Federation spokesperson Mark Cameron said that this visit is a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for chess players in Jamaica to learn directly from one of the best players in chess history.
“This is really an outstanding opportunity because it is very rare,” he added.
Cameron believes Jamaica’s “GM in 10” programme could bring even more elite players to the island in the near future.
Fabiano Caruana himself is excited to visit Jamaica: “I’ll be headed to beautiful Jamaica soon to meet with the island’s best players, as the chess federation (along with native son GM Maurice Ashley) set their sights on producing their very first home grown GM!”
