World No1 GM Magnus Carlsen was officially expelled from the 9th round of the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship 2024 because of the violation of the dress code.
Magnus Carlsen wore jeans and first received a fine of $200 and a warning to change according to the detailed dress code that FIDE presented this year. Carlsen didn’t change and told the Arbiter that he will change tomorrow, but the Chief Arbiter Alex Holowczak decided not to pair him for the 9th round, nor any other until the jeans are changed.
After the incident, Magnus Carlsen revealed to “Take Take Take” app that he will not compete in the World Rapid Blitz Chess Championship and that he will leave New York for a place with nicer weather.
In the meantime, FIDE published official statement on Magnus Carlsen’s dress code breach and the social media exploded with reactions.
Norwegian media is overwhelmed with news about Magnus Carlsen’s case with the hashtag #JeansGate.
Magnus Carlsen is not the only player fined for the violation of the dress code. GM Ian Nepomniachtchi was also fined with $200 for wearing jeans and joked on his X/Twitter account that he hopes the fine will go to Chess Fashion Research Foundation. According to Nepomniachtchi’s writing, GM Ahmed Adly (Egypt) reported him for the dress code violation.
