Indian GM Gukesh Dommaraju has won the 2024 Candidates Chess Tournament and is the youngest player in history to qualify for the World Championship match. He will challenge Ding Liren in the title match later this year.
In the final round Gukesh held Hikaru Nakamura to a draw, while Fabiano Caruana spoiled excellent winning chances against two-times WCC challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi. Nakamura, Caruana and Nepomniachtchi all remained half a point behind the winner.
After signing the scoresheets, Nepomniachtchi said “I’m very sorry”, to which Caruana replied “It’s my fault”.
Former Women’s World Champion Tan Zhongyi will have another shot at claiming the title as she convincingly won the 2024 Women’s Candidates Tournament, leaving the chasing pack a 1,5 points behind. Tan will challenge her compatriot Ju Wenjun.
