The American Chess Cup 2024 has reached the Finals in both the Open and Women’s sections! The Winner of each Final match will play for the American Cup crown in the Grand Finale against the elimination bracket winners.
The American Chess Cup 2024 Finals in the Open section will be played between GM Levon Aronian and GM Ray Robson. Levon Aronian advanced to the finals after defeating World No2 Fabiano Caruana in an exciting match which was concluded with blitz games. The first four games (mix of 2 classical and 2 rapid) finished with draws, and the mini two-game blitz match determined the Winner. With a convincing result 2-0, Levon Aronian defeated Fabiano Caruana and secured his place in the finals.
Ray Robson and Wesley So completed their semi-final match after regular four games. Robson scored two victories in the rapid portions, and since both classical games finished in a draw, Ray advanced to compete in the Champions bracket.
The Grand Finale will be played between the Winner of the Champions bracket, and the Winner of the Elimination bracket. So far, Wesley So, Sam Sevian, Fabiano Caruana and Leinier Dominguez still fight for the Grand Finale, and the loser in the Champions bracket finals will also have a second chance to compete for the title.
Eight-time US Women’s Champion and two-time American Women’s Cup winner GM Irina Krush will fight against IM Alice Lee in the Finals of the Women’s section.
Irina Krush defeated IM Paikidze in the semi-finals with the final score of 3-1. Krush kicked off the match with two victories, but Paikidze won the third game on demand. However, Krush scored again in the fourth game to advance to the finals.
IM Alice Lee fiercely won her semi-final match against WGM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova with a convincing 3-0 score, advancing further in the Champions bracket.
The Women’s elimination bracket now features WGM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova, WGM Jennifer Yu, FM Zoey Tang and IM Paikidze.
