Georgios Mitsis and WGM Marina Makropoulou crowned as Greek Chess Champions 2022

20-year-old Georgios Mitsis clinched his maiden Greek Chess Champion title after winning the 71st Panhellenic Chess Championship. Meanwhile, 62-year-old WGM Marina Makropoulou claimed the 44th Panhellenic Women’s Chess Championship, breaking two records – clinching the 9th Women’s Champion title and becoming the oldest woman to win the Greek National Championship.

Georgios Mitsis scored unbeaten 7/9 points to win the Open event convincingly – with a round to spare! FM Nikolaos Koutlas and GM Spyridon Skembris trailed by a point and a half, tying for silver with a score of 5.5 points each. Tiebreak criteria favored Nikolaos Koutlas who won the silver medal and Spyridon Skembris came third.

WGM Marina Makropoulou clinched her 9th national title thanks to the first-round victory against Antonia Christodoulaki. Makropoulou and Christodoulaki finished the event with a score of 7 points, each, and the tiebreak criteria – direct encounter determined the winner. Marina Makropoulou defeated Antonia Christodoulaki in the first round, thus claiming the 44th Panhellenic Women’s Chess Championship. Magdalini Mihailidou won bronze with 6 points.

Theย 71st Panhellenic Individual Chess Championshipย and the 44th Panhellenic Women’s Individual Chess Championship were held from 3rd โ€“ 11th December 2022 in the headquarters of the Greek Chess Federation in Athens. The Open event was a 10-player round-robin tournament, and the Women’s Championship featured 11 players who fought for the national title over 10 round-robin rounds. The time control was: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, with 30 more minutes for the rest of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting on move one.
