Esports World Cup 2026 Relocates to Paris

French chess grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (MVL) has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Esports World Cup due to an irreconcilable scheduling conflict with the Grand Chess Tour.

Despite weeks of negotiations and efforts from all parties involved, the clash between the two prestigious events forced the French star to choose between his commitments.

Team Vitality, the prominent esports organization representing MVL, released their official statement in full regarding the situation:

Due to pre-existing contractual commitments relating to the Grand Chess Tour, Team Vitality’s chess player Maxime “MVL” Vachier-Lagrave will be forced to withdraw from the Esports World Cup 2026.

Since learning of the scheduling conflict between the Grand Chess Tour and EWC 2026, Team Vitality has been working diligently with MVL and respective stakeholders to find solutions.

Throughout the process, we remained optimistic that MVL would be able to represent Team Vitality at EWC 2026 in Paris. However, pre-existing legal obligations around the situation did not allow us to resolve the conflict in favor of participation at the Esports World Cup. Ultimately, it is the players impacted by this scheduling conflict, as well as their teams, who will face the consequences.

As a result, MVL and Team Vitality have no choice but to withdraw MVL from EWC 2026. This decision has been made ahead of the Last Chance Qualifier to allow the tournament organizers to find a suitable replacement under the best possible conditions.

While we would have loved to see MVL play in front of our home crowd in Paris, we will continue to support MVL in the upcoming Grand Chess Tour and ask you to give your full support to him in future chess tournaments.

Team Vitality

Following the organization’s announcement, MVL added that despite months of hard work with Team Vitality to find a solution, the scheduling conflict with the tournament organizers could not be resolved.

He expressed deep regret over being forced to choose between two competitions close to his heart, explaining that he ultimately had to honor his prior commitment to the Grand Chess Tour.

While disappointed to miss the chance to represent Vitality in Paris, he extended his full support to the team and teammate Jules Moussard, looking forward to returning under better circumstances in 2027.
