The 2026 African Individual Chess Championship concluded on June 27 at the Cresta Lodge in Jwaneng, Botswana.
Organized by the African Chess Confederation (ACC) in collaboration with FIDE and the Botswana Chess Federation, the tournament brought together top players from across the continent to compete over nine rounds under the classical Swiss System. This year’s edition featured an increased prize fund of USD 30,050, reflecting a growing focus on the development of professional chess in Africa.
The Open section developed into a thrilling two-horse race between the continent’s highest-rated player, GM Bassem Amin of Egypt, and the defending champion, GM Bilel Bellahcene of Algeria.
The two frontrunners were neck-and-neck halfway through the tournament, sharing the lead with 4.5/5 points each. A key sixth-round encounter saw Bellahcene defeat Amin to take a crucial sole lead. However, demonstrating the resilience of a seven-time continental champion, Amin bounced back with three consecutive victories to catch up by the final round.
Ultimately, both grandmasters finished at the top of the standings with an impressive 7.5/9 points. Thanks to a superior tiebreak, GM Bilel Bellahcene successfully secured the gold medal, defending his title from last year and solidifying his position among Africa’s elite.
The Women’s tournament evolved into an extraordinary display of sisterly dominance, as Egypt’s renowned Wafa sisters took control of the field.
WGM Shahenda Wafa set the pace for most of the event. A pair of draws from Shahenda in the final rounds allowed her older sister and defending champion, WGM Shrook Wafa, to bridge the gap and join her at the summit. Both sisters finished the grueling 9-round classical schedule undefeated, comfortably sharing first place with 7.5/9 points.
When the tiebreaks were calculated, WGM Shahenda Wafa claimed the official continental crown, earning her fourth individual African Championship title. Remarkably, this victory means the two sisters now hold a combined 9 African Women’s Championship titles out of the 14 editions ever played, an unprecedented legacy in continental chess history.
With a prize distribution that awarded USD 6,500 to the Open winner and USD 4,000 to the Women’s champion, the tournament concluded as an important event for the financial and professional advancement of chess on the continent.
The logistics and playing environment provided by the Cresta Lodge Jwaneng met international standards, setting a solid baseline for future African championships.
