Sussex Chess Festival 2026

This July, the historic coastal town of Brighton will transform into the epicenter of British chess as Sussex University proudly introduces the Sussex Chess Festival 2026.

Spanning from July 21st to July 26th, 2026, this grand festival bridges the gap between world-class mastery and community participation. Hosted primarily at the state-of-the-art Student Centre at the University of Sussex, the festival brings a packed schedule featuring title-norm opportunities, amateur congresses, educational clinics, and networking spaces for players and families alike.

Sussex University Masters Tournament

Running across the full duration of the festival (July 21st – 26th), the Sussex University Masters Tournament stands as a premium international open designed specifically for high-level competitive play. Carrying a strict rating floor of Over 2000 FIDE, the event ensures a dense field of master-level opposition.

Format & Time Control: A 9-round Swiss system tournament governed by the standard FIDE time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move from move one.

Elite Field & Norms: The tournament offers official FIDE Title Norm Opportunities (Grandmaster and International Master norms), attracting a number of international titleholders, including top seeds such as GM Stepan Zilka (CZE) and England’s own iconic GM Simon Williams.

A total prize fund of £4,000 is guaranteed. The rewards are featuring a £1,200 first prize, alongside dedicated cash awards for top Juniors, Seniors (50+), Female players, and specific FIDE rating bands (U2200 and U2100).

5th Sussex University Chess Congress

For those below the 2000 FIDE threshold, the weekend of July 24th – 26th will see the staging of the 5th Sussex University Chess Congress. Operating with an overall prize pool of £1,000, the congress is tiered into three distinct sections to provide balanced, competitive environments for all tiers of experience:

Under 2050 (U2050): FIDE & ECF Rated | 90+30 Time Control | Friday 24th – Sunday 26th July
Under 1700 (U1700): FIDE & ECF Rated | 90+30 Time Control | Friday 24th – Sunday 26th July
Under 1300 (U1300): ECF Rated Only | 60+30 Time Control | Saturday 25th – Sunday 26th July

Evening Blitz Extravaganzas

In addition to the classical events, the congress will host two adrenaline-fueled FIDE-rated Blitz Events. These will take place on Thursday, July 23rd and Saturday, July 25th at 7:00 PM, offering players a perfect opportunity to unwind or sharpen their tactical vision under extreme time pressure.

The Summer School: Educational & Interactive Programming

The festival features a dedicated Sussex University Summer School from July 23rd to July 24th (10:00 AM – 4:00 PM). Moving slightly across campus to the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (Teaching Building, Falmer, BN1 9PX), this academic block is delivered by highly experienced local, national, and international coaches.

Simultaneous Exhibitions: Attendees will have the unique privilege of testing their wits in live simultaneous exhibitions against resident Grandmasters (GMs) and International Masters (IMs).

Arbiter & Parent Support: Broadening its reach beyond the players, the festival introduces an official Arbiter Training Course to cultivate the next generation of certified tournament officials, alongside a dedicated Chess Parents Panel to help families successfully navigate the psychological and logistical landscape of competitive junior chess.

All main tournament rounds will take place in the spacious, modern Student Centre at the University of Sussex, Brighton (BN1 9BU). Recognizing the challenges of summer travel, organizers have arranged discounted on-site university accommodation for participants and their families. This accommodation operates strictly on a first-come, first-served basis, making immediate booking highly advisable.
