FIDE Facing Legal Deadline Regarding Russian Chess Federation Sanctions

by pinnedrook

Today is the official deadline given by the Court of Arbitration of Sport to the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) and FIDE, George Mastrokoukos reminded on Twitter/X.

The RCF is still violating the territorial integrity of the NOC Ukraine, as recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in accordance with the Olympic Charter. The IOC has already suspended the Russian Olympic Committee for the same reason since 2023.”

The CAS decision is very clear that the suspension of the RCF applies automatically. The FIDE President has a legal obligation, as the top signatory of FIDE’s daily management, to instruct the FIDE office to remove the RCF from the FIDE database by today 23:59 CET time.”

Yesterday FIDE published on the website:

In accordance with the CAS decision in case CAS 2024/A/10911, the Chess Federation of Russia was required to comply with the decision by 9 June 2026.

The FIDE Council has therefore formally requested the Chess Federation of Russia to provide evidence of its compliance with the decision.

In line with Article 20.9 of the FIDE Charter, a meeting of the FIDE Council has been scheduled for 17 June 2026 to assess the implementation of the CAS decision and to take any decisions in accordance with the FIDE Charter.

But George Mastrokoukos clarifies:
“There is no “decision to be taken”. Court decisions are final and should be enforced as the court instructs (automatically by today when is the deadline – not 17th of June). FIDE is already violating the court decision with this announcement.
