The Scottish chess calendar for 2026 is set to feature a premier event as Chess Scotland announces the Scottish Championship International Open.

Scheduled to take place from July 3rd to July 8th, 2026, the tournament will be hosted at the prestigious Banqueting Hall of the South Lanarkshire Council Headquarters in Hamilton, Scotland.

This event serves a dual purpose: it is a high-level 9-round FIDE-rated classical open open to players of all nationalities, and it also serves as the battleground to determine the 2026 Scottish Champion.

The tournament will follow a single-section “International Open” format, ensuring a diverse and challenging field of players.
Time Control: A full classical control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move from move one.
Rounds: 9 rounds of play.
Title Eligibility: While the Open is international, the official Scottish Championship title will be awarded to the highest-placed eligible Scottish player.
The event boasts a confirmed prize fund of £2,100.

The Banqueting Hall in Hamilton provides a central, civic setting that is both practical and professional. Located on Almada Street, the venue is well-positioned for international visitors and local players alike, offering an ideal environment for a concentrated week of summer chess.

Entry Fees:
Adults: £100 (£80 for Chess Scotland members)
Juniors: £80 (£60 for Chess Scotland members)
Players are encouraged to register early via the Congress Org UK platform. A late fee of £20 applies to entries made after July 1st, 2026.

The tournament kicks off on Friday, July 3rd, with a double-round day. The schedule remains demanding throughout the week, concluding with the final round and prizegiving on Wednesday, July 8th.
