In a bold move to support the future of European chess, the Romanian Chess Federation (FRSAH), in partnership with the Dragic Foundation, has officially launched “Cuibul de Șah” (The Chess Nest) project.
This ambitious initiative is designed to provide structured financial and logistical support to junior players who achieve elite international titles before the age of 18.
As the Romanian Chess Federation enters its second century of existence in 2026, this project represents one of the most significant investments in youth performance in the region’s history.
Strategic Investment in Grandmasters
The “Chess Nest” program introduces a structured reward system tailored to the age and title achieved by the player. The goal is clear: to incentivize early excellence and provide the resources necessary to transition from a talented junior to a world-class professional.
Male Category: Grandmaster (GM) Bonuses
For young male players reaching the highest title in chess, the rewards are as follows:
| Age | Grandmaster (GM) Title |
| 14 years | €15,000 |
| 15 years | €14,000 |
| 16 years | €12,000 |
| 17 years | €11,000 |
| 18 years | €10,000 |
Female Category: WGM & IM Bonuses
The program also places a strong emphasis on the development of female players, offering bonuses for both Woman Grandmaster and International Master titles:
| Age | Woman Grandmaster (WGM) | International Master (IM) |
| 14 years | €7,500 | €15,000 |
| 15 years | €7,000 | €14,000 |
| 16 years | €6,000 | €12,000 |
| 17 years | €5,500 | €11,000 |
| 18 years | €5,000 | €10,000 |
A €100,000 Long-Term Development Path
Beyond the one-time title bonuses, eligible athletes enter a comprehensive four-year support cycle. The total investment per player is estimated at €100,000, covering all essential aspects of professional growth:
- Top-Tier Training: 40 days per year of intensive sessions with elite international coaches (both individual and group formats).
- International Circuit: Full financial coverage for participation in 5 strong international open tournaments annually.
- Stipend & Stability: A monthly allowance of €250 to ensure players can focus entirely on their preparation.
- National Duty: Junior players will represent Romania at Major World and European Championships, acting as ambassadors for the “Chess Nest” brand.
A Modern Identity for Performance
The project is presented under the brand “Cuibul de Șah”, a concept reflecting a nurturing environment where performance is incubated, supported, and progressively developed.
“This is a remarkable initiative for the development of young players in Romania and consequently in Europe,” stated the European Chess Union (ECU), highlighting the project’s significance beyond national borders.
By connecting financial rewards with professional coaching and international competition, Romania is setting a new gold standard for how national federations can support their “wonderkids” in the modern era of chess.
