The Portuguese Chess Federation (FPX) has announced a historic milestone for the nation’s sports community. Filipa Pipiras, the top-ranked female player in Portugal, has officially achieved the title of Woman Grandmaster (WGM), marking the greatest achievement ever by a Portuguese female chess player.
Pipiras secured her third and final definitive norm during a stellar performance at the Grenke Open in Germany. Representing her club, Xadrez Colégio Efanor, she concluded the prestigious tournament with 6.5 points out of 9 rounds, achieving a remarkable Elo performance of 2510 points.
Her path to the title included several high-profile victories against international masters, including IM Yevhenii Yelisiev (2396, Germany), FM Sven Charmetau (2399, France) and GM Namig Guliyev (2481, Azerbaijan).
By the end of the eighth round, Pipiras had already met the requirements for the WGM norm and the International Master (IM) absolute norm. Although she faced a loss in the final round against German Grandmaster Luis Engel (2594), her overall performance remained dominant.
Entering the tournament as the 233rd seed, Pipiras defied expectations by finishing in 42nd place out of 998 players. This performance earned her 60 Elo points, pushing her official rating to 2320. The WGM title is awarded not only for her three norms but also for surpassing the required 2300 Elo threshold.
The Grenke Open also saw success for other top Portuguese talent. International Master José Bárria (2373) finished in 27th place with 7 points, gaining 13 Elo points to further bolster Portugal’s standing in the international chess arena.
This achievement by Filipa Pipiras represents a new era for Portuguese chess, setting a high bar for future generations of players.
