Erling Haaland, the Manchester City striker and Norwegian football icon, has announced a landmark investment in Norway Chess to launch the Total Chess World Championship Tour!
The partnership, confirmed today by FIDE and Norway Chess, marks perhaps the most significant infusion of mainstream sporting celebrity into the chess world. For Haaland, a known chess enthusiast, the investment is more than a vanity project; it is a strategic play to modernise how the game is consumed, broadcast, and monetised.
A New Vision for the World Championship
The core of the announcement is the birth of the Total Chess World Championship Tour. The new championship, featuring the world’s best players, is expected to become one of the most significant developments in modern chess. The Total Chess World Championship Tour will consist of four tournaments each year, hosted by four different cities, and will crown a combined world champion across three disciplines: Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz chess. Each season will feature a minimum annual prize pool of 2,7 million USD.
While the official field is yet to be confirmed, Magnus Carlsen is expected to be the tour’s central figure. As a perennial participant and multiple-time winner of Norway Chess, the former World Champion’s involvement would provide the competitive gravitas needed to match Haaland’s commercial backing. Carlsen has long advocated for formats that reward versatility across all time controls, making this “combined” world title a natural fit for his current professional focus.
“Beyond the Board”
“Chess is an incredible game. It sharpens your mind, and there are clear similarities to football. You have to think quickly, trust your instincts, and think several moves ahead. Strategy and planning are everything,” Haaland noted in a statement released via TotalChess.com. “I’m investing in Norway Chess because I believe the new Total Chess World Championship Tour can turn chess into an even bigger sport for spectators around the world.“
The investment isn’t merely financial, but suggest that Haaland’s brand will be used to secure high-tier sponsors currently absent from the chess ecosystem, potentially elevating prize funds in chess to much higher levels.

The FIDE Perspective
International Chess Federation (FIDE) approved a groundbreaking Total Chess World Championship tour, developed and owned by Norway Chess.
“Seeing a world-class athlete like Erling Haaland join the Total World Chess Championship Tour is a powerful signal of the global attention and cultural relevance that chess enjoys today. “, said FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich.
Chess Mates
Together with Norwegian business leader Morten Borge, Haaland has established the company Chess Mates, which will be a significant owner of Norway Chess.
“We expect the new championship to become one of the most prestigious events in the global chess calendar,” says Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess and Total Chess. “The fact that Erling is joining us as an investor says a great deal about the commercial potential of this tour. With Erling on board, we are now entering the final phase of finding host cities for the first tour.“

A Shift in Gravity?
For the chess world, the “Haaland Effect” could be transformative. This partnership signals a move toward the systematic commercialization of the sport, positioning chess as a premier global entertainment product capable of attracting elite-tier sponsorship. By merging high performance sports marketing with the traditional elite circuit, the initiative seeks to elevate the professional game into the same commercial stratosphere as top-flight football or Formula 1.
As the elite field prepares for the upcoming Candidates Tournament and Chess Olympiad 2026, the shadow of “Total Chess” looms large. If Haaland can bring even a fraction of his clinical efficiency from the Premier League to the chessboard, the game’s professional era may have just found its most powerful striker yet.
