7,000 Participants Join the Chess Party in Stockholm

by pinnedrook

In a weekend that transformed the Avicii Arena into a global epicenter for the 64 squares, Stockholm hosted the “Chess Party” on April 17–18, 2026. With chess festival, educational summit, and world-record attempt, the event proved that chess is a massive, inclusive, cultural phenomenon.

A World Record Attempt Kicked Off the Festivities

The event began with an ambitious goal: to host the largest chess lecture ever recorded. Led by the the best female player of all time Judit Polgar, alongside famous chess streamer Andrea Botez and European Chess Union’s Educational Commission Chairman Jesper Hall, the Kings & Queens Stage became a massive classroom. Thousands of participants joined in simultaneously, solving puzzles and interacting in the lesson in real-time.

Beyond just setting a record, the session aimed to demonstrate the game’s modern evolution. It combined professional chess instruction with high-energy public participation to reach audiences far beyond the traditional chess community.

From Schoolyards to the Avicii Arena

One of the most impressive statistics of the weekend came from the youth sector. A staggering 25,000 schoolchildren from 1,000 classes across Sweden participated in the initial stages of the “Chess Party” initiative. On Friday, the finals saw the top performers crowned in a ceremony that highlighted the “Chess in Schools” programmes.

The festival utilized a unique “1-2-3 pawn system”, with one point for participation, two for a draw, and three for a win. Jesper Hall, ECU EDU Commission Chairman and the CEO of ChessParty, explained that this system shows that every child matters: “We show that every child matters by using the ‘1-2-3 pawn system’: one point for participation, two for a draw, and three for a win. This way, it’s not about having elite players; it’s about including as many children as possible.“.

Icons, Influencers, and Grandmasters

The “Chess Party” bridged the gap between the game’s history and its digital future with many interesting sessions in the programme

  • Henrik Carlsen delivered an engaging lecture on the early development of his son, Magnus Carlsen, who also made a special digital appearance to answer questions from the young attendees.
  • High-profile streamers like GothamChess (Levy Rozman), Anna Cramling, and Andrea Botez drew massive crowds for meet-and-greets and exhibition matches, proving the massive influence of chess content creators.
  • Grandmasters Alexei Shirov and Simen Agdestein provided masterclasses on the ‘International Stage,” while Nils Grandelius and Pia and Anna Cramling faced off against the public in simultaneous exhibitions.
  • Former Women’s World Champion Antoaneta Stefanova took part in a simultaneous exhibition and delivered a masterclass, sharing her experience and insights with participants.
  • The program also featured David Howell, a well-known commentator, who accepted the popular “Challenge a Grandmaster” format, giving players the opportunity to test their skills against him.
  • Similarly, Jon Ludvig Hammer was among the grandmasters available for players to challenge, adding further excitement to the day.
  • There was also a Blindfold Challenge where GM Axel Smith captivated the audence by playing multiple opponents without looking at the boards.

Inclusivity at the Core: The Queen’s Party

The second day placed a heavy focus on the future of women in chess. The “Little Star Girls Blitz” and the “Queen’s Party” tournament created a dedicated space for women and girls of all levels.

In a panel discussion, Judit Polgar, Pia Cramling, and Anna Cramling discussed the barriers women still face in the game. They explored topics ranging from the necessity of separate titles to strategies for encouraging girls to stay in the sport long-term, aiming for a future where women have equal opportunities to succeed on the highest levels.

Conclusion: More Than Just a Game

As the lights dimmed on the Avicii Arena, the message of the Stockholm Chess Party was clear. With over 7,000 attendees and 25 distinct events over two days, the festival was a testament to the game’s universal appeal.

FIDE official Dana Reizniece summarized the spirit of the event perfectly: “This is a festival where chess is used as a tool for integration and for building a better society.” Whether you were a “little star” making your first move or a World Champion, the Stockholm Chess Party proved there is a place at the table for everyone.
