50th Rilton Cup to be the first 2023 event of the new FIDE Candidates qualification Circuit

The 50th edition of the Rilton Cup will be the first event to be part of FIDE’s new qualification path to the Candidate Tournament. The event will take place from December 27 to January 5 at the Scandic Continental Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden.

It will be a 9-round swiss tournament with more than 130 entries from 29 countries. GM Krishnan Sasikiran, GM Ilia Smirin and GM Leon Livaic will headline the field which features 20 grandmasters, 42 international masters, and a total of 119 titled players. The prize fund amounts to 120.000 SEK (approximately $11.500).

No draw offers will be allowed before the 30th move. The time control will be 40 moves in 90 min, followed by 30 min for the rest of the game, with an increment of 30 sec/move. The event will follow strict anti-cheating protocols and prepared for the tournament with FIDE’s Fair Play Commission.
