World Chess Championship Match 2024 – Regulations

World Chess Championship Match Ding vs Gukesh in Singapore

The World Chess Championship Match between the defending Champion Ding Liren and the Challenger Gukesh D is set to take place from 23rd November to 15th December in Singapore.

The match will consist of 14 classical games. Each game will follow the time control of 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment starting from move 41.

The player who scores 7.5 points or more wins the World Championship Match. If the score after fourteen games is equal, then tie-breaks will be played.

The format for tiebreaks has another layer of the rapid games, introduced to gradually decrease the playing speed.

  • Four games of 15 min + 10 sec increment (Instead of 25 min + 10 sec as before)
  • If the score is still level, two games of 10 min + 5 sec increment (This is new)
  • If the score is still level, two games of 3 min + 2 sec increment
  • If the score is still level, a Sudden Death game of 3 min + 2 sec will be played until there is decisive result

The total prize fund for the match is $2,5 million.
Each player will receive $200,000 for each game they win.
The remaining prize money will be split equally between the players.
If the winner is decided on a tie-break, the prize money will be divided as follows: the winner receives $1,300,000, and the runner-up receives $1,200,000.

Regulations also go into great detail to elaborate the benefits and stipends for the FIDE staff.

The defending Champion Ding Liren (China) has won the title by defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi in a 2023 match in Astana, Kazakhstan. The Challenger Gukesh D (India) has qualified for the match by winning the 2024 Candidates Tournament in Toronto.
